Thanksgiving break
A Thanksgiving plastic surgery trip
to Medellín: what actually fits
You've got Thursday and Friday off, the weekend tacks itself on, and you're wondering if that's enough time for a procedure in Medellín. The honest answer depends on your real number of days, not on how badly you want it to work.
Thanksgiving gives you Thursday and Friday off, and the weekend tacks on by itself. Somewhere between booking flights, the question comes up: should this be the trip where you also get a procedure done in Medellín? It's a fair question, and the honest answer has less to do with how much you want it to work and more with how many real days you'll actually have in the country, which is usually fewer than you first picture.
Thanksgiving doesn't change Medellín's rhythm
Unlike December, Thanksgiving is a US holiday, not a Colombian one. On Thursday, November 26, 2026, you have the day off work; in Medellín, it's an ordinary Thursday. No school closures, no "novenas," no local family calendar eating into your recovery time, the way December's holiday season does. That part of the trip is simpler. What doesn't change is that the break itself tends to be short, and that's worth checking against real numbers before you get attached to the plan.
How much time each option actually needs
A typical Thanksgiving break, travel included, runs 4 or 5 days if Thursday and Friday are all the time off you have. That's less than almost any surgery calls for. Before booking anything, it's worth comparing your actual days off against the reference stay for each type of procedure.
Laid out that way, the problem is easy to see: even the shortest facial surgeries, like eyelid surgery, need more time than a 4- or 5-day weekend gives you. Without extra vacation days tacked onto either end of the holiday, the math simply doesn't work for most surgeries.
Why rushing it isn't worth the risk
This isn't only a calendar problem. The ASPS notes that clot risk from immobility, including a long flight, is higher during the six weeks after surgery, and that, as general guidance, patients should wait 5 to 7 days before flying after body procedures and 7 to 10 days after facial surgery. Flying home on day two or three because Monday means back to the office isn't a decision the calendar gets to make; it's your surgeon's call, based on how your follow-up visit goes, never a return date set in advance.
There's a practical layer on top of that: the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving are historically, year after year, among the busiest air-travel days in the US, and the Sunday after the holiday too. If your route to Medellín connects through Miami or Houston, that congestion hits twice, going down and coming back, right when you have the least room for a flight change.
What actually fits in the long weekend
Non-surgical treatments are where the real room is. A treatment like Botox takes a single visit with no days of recovery built in, so it fits comfortably between Thursday's dinner and the flight home. If you're set on a facial procedure and can take 3 or 4 extra vacation days before or after the holiday, eyelid surgery can get close to working; breast surgery or body contouring, with a 1- to 3-week reference stay, almost never fits into a trip built only around Thanksgiving. For your own numbers, how long to stay in Colombia after plastic surgery (page in Spanish) breaks it down by procedure, and when can I fly after liposuction (page in Spanish) goes into that specific part of the trip home.
If your trip runs into December
Some patients with family in Medellín stretch the Thanksgiving trip a few extra days, into late November or early December. If that's you, you may catch the start of the city's Christmas lights display, which usually goes up around that time. That's useful for planning a longer trip you're already taking, not a reason to rush a procedure your surgeon thinks needs more days than you have.
What we won't promise you
We won't tell you that any surgery fits into a four-day weekend because you're "already going to be there," or that a return flight date can be locked in before anyone sees how your recovery is going. Every procedure carries risks, and surgery scheduled to "fit" before Monday's commute back to the office is exactly the kind of decision we don't make by calendar. What we can offer is an in-person consultation with our specialists, so you hear, based on your case and your real dates, what fits and what doesn't; pre-op tests when the procedure calls for them; and WhatsApp or video follow-up once you're back in the US, which supports but never replaces the in-person checks your specialist orders before you fly. For how to check that a clinic handles that the right way, is it safe to get plastic surgery in Colombia (page in Spanish) goes into more detail.
This week, before you book the Thanksgiving ticket, message us on WhatsApp and tell us how many real days you have, including any extra vacation time. We'll tell you what genuinely fits in that trip, and what's better left for another date.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Is a Thanksgiving long weekend enough time for surgery?
For most procedures, no. A typical Thanksgiving break runs 4 to 5 days including travel; face or breast surgery calls for a 1- to 2-week reference stay, and body contouring, 2 to 3 weeks. What usually does fit is a non-surgical treatment, done in a single visit or a few days.
Does Medellín feel any different that week?
Not really. Thanksgiving is a US holiday, not a Colombian one. That week in Medellín is an ordinary week: no school closures, no local family holiday competing for your time, unlike December.
Should I book flights far ahead?
Yes. The Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving are historically, year after year, among the busiest air-travel days in the US, and the Sunday after the holiday too. If your route connects through Miami or Houston, that congestion hits you twice, on the way down and on the way back.
If I take a few extra vacation days, could that cover a face procedure?
It can get closer. Eyelid surgery, one of the shorter-recovery facial procedures, calls for a 1- to 2-week reference stay; the holiday weekend plus 3 or 4 additional vacation days gets some patients there. Your surgeon confirms it at the consultation, against your real dates.
Can I stretch the trip into early December?
If your trip runs into late November or early December, you may catch the start of Medellín's Christmas lights display. That's a detail worth knowing for planning the trip, not a reason to rush a procedure.
