December in Medellín

Plastic surgery in Colombia
over the holidays

You already have the December trip to Colombia booked. The real question is whether a procedure fits into it too, or whether that's asking too much of one trip.

You already bought the ticket to Medellín for December, or you're about to, to spend the holidays with family. Packing the suitcase, the other question comes up: since you'll already be there, should you get a procedure done on the same trip? It's a fair question. It's also the one that's easiest to answer badly, because December in Colombia isn't just another month to plan surgery around, and not because of the weather.

First: the weather isn't the issue

If you're flying in from a Boston or New York winter, it's tempting to picture Medellín as a warm break to recover in. The climate does help: the city stays mild almost all year, with daily highs and lows roughly between 63 and 82°F, without the dry cold of a December in the US Northeast. But that's not what complicates a December trip. What complicates it is everything else happening in those same weeks: flights, family, and a holiday calendar that doesn't pause just because you scheduled surgery.

Why December is the tightest month to fly into Medellín

It's not a coincidence that good fares get hard to find this time of year. December and the first days of January are peak travel season to Colombia: it's when the most Colombians living abroad fly home to see family, and that demand pushes fares up and seats down. We won't give you a number for how much fares rise, or an exact date range, because that changes every year and from one source to the next. What doesn't change: booking far ahead and, when you can, keeping your return flexible gives you more room if your specialist needs to move your flight-home date.

Body contouring or combined surgeryReference stay: 2 to 3 weeks

The holidays don't pause for your recovery

Here's the part almost nobody asks before booking: December in Medellín means "novenas" (nightly family prayer gatherings leading up to Christmas), the city's Christmas lights display lit from late November through mid-January, and a family schedule that fills itself in. If you have surgery right when you land, the first days, exactly the ones that call for rest and no alcohol or late nights, will overlap with the celebrations you likely flew down for. That's not a reason to cancel the plan. It's honesty about the trade-off: either you miss part of those first nights, or you move surgery to another point in the trip.

We won't promise that a procedure bends itself around your family calendar just because you already booked a December flight. That call belongs to your surgeon at the consultation, based on the procedure and the real days you have, not the holiday schedule.

What fits in a short trip, and what needs more time

If your trip is a week and mainly about seeing family, a non-surgical treatment, like botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid fillers, takes a single visit or a few days and leaves far more room for the holidays. Surgery is a different conversation: liposuction, for example, calls for a 2- to 3-week reference stay, with real rest in the first days. If your December trip runs three weeks or longer, it can work for both surgery and the family gatherings, but it's worth planning which comes first: the consultation and the procedure, ahead of the more demanding celebrations.

What we won't promise you

We won't tell you that any surgeon can bend their schedule just because you'll already be in Medellín in December, or that recovery adapts itself to your family's holiday plans. Every procedure carries risks, and surgery rushed to "fit" before a party is exactly the kind of decision we don't make. What we can offer is an in-person consultation with our specialists, pre-op tests before surgery, and WhatsApp or video follow-up once you're back in the US, which supports but never replaces the in-person checks your specialist orders before you fly. For how to check that a clinic handles that process the right way, is it safe to get plastic surgery in Colombia (page in Spanish) goes into more detail.

This week, before you book or confirm your ticket, message us on WhatsApp and tell us how many real days you have in December. We'll help you figure out what actually fits in that trip, and what's better left for another date.

This guide is for information only and does not replace a medical consultation. Your specialist decides, in person, whether a procedure is right for you, your recovery time and when you can fly home. Every procedure carries risks and results vary from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine my December trip home with a procedure?

It depends on how many real days you have and which procedure. Body-contouring or combined surgeries call for a 2- to 3-week stay; face and breast surgery, 1 to 2 weeks. Message us before you book, and we'll go over it against your actual dates.

Does cold weather or the change in climate affect recovery?

There's no winter in Medellín: temperatures stay mild nearly year-round, roughly 63 to 82°F. December's real challenge isn't the weather, it's the calendar: family events, a packed schedule and tighter flights.

Should I book flights far in advance?

Yes. December and the first days of January are peak season to Colombia, mainly because so many Colombians living abroad fly home for the holidays, and that demand drives fares up and seats down. Book early and, if you can, keep your return flexible.

Can I go to family parties while I'm recovering?

In the first days after surgery, you shouldn't: rest, avoiding alcohol and following your surgeon's instructions matter more than one gathering. It's a real trade-off worth deciding before surgery, not halfway through the holiday season.

If my trip is short, what can I actually get done?

Non-surgical treatments like botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid fillers take a single visit or a few days. Surgery needs more time in the city; which one makes sense for your trip gets decided at an in-person consultation.
