Plastic surgery in Medellin
from Miami, without the rush
A short flight is a real advantage. It is not a reason to rush your recovery.
From Miami, Medellin is closer than most people expect: about three and a half hours nonstop. That is a big part of why people in South Florida look into plastic surgery in Medellin from Miami. A short flight is the easy part. The harder question, especially if you grew up in the U.S., is whether it is safe. So that is where we start.
Is surgery in Medellin safe? What to look for
No honest clinic will tell you surgery is risk-free. Bleeding, infection, healing problems and anesthesia-related complications can happen anywhere. What you can control is where you go and how that place works. These are the standards we hold ourselves to at noon Clinic, and the ones we suggest you check at any clinic, including ours:
- An operating room, not an office. Our surgeries take place in licensed operating rooms at Q2, our surgical facility. Never in a consultation room.
- An in-person consultation first. We can share information and book you over WhatsApp. Nobody is diagnosed or "approved" for surgery remotely.
- Pre-op labs, no exceptions. If your results are not where they need to be, surgery is postponed.
- Informed consent. Risks are explained one by one before you sign anything.
- Someone willing to say no. If a procedure is not safe or does not make sense for you, we tell you.
Red flags work the other way around: no lab work, surgery in an office, pressure to pay quickly, a yes to everything. Our safety page covers this in more detail (it is in Spanish).
Plastic surgery in Medellin from Miami: the flight
American and Avianca fly nonstop from Miami International (MIA) to Medellin in about 3 hours and 30 minutes. If Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is easier for you, Avianca and JetBlue also fly nonstop. Schedules change, so check current routes before booking.
One thing first-time visitors do not expect: Medellin's airport, José María Córdova (MDE), is not in the city. It sits in Rionegro, a separate town, and you reach Medellin by road. Plan for that drive on arrival and on the day you leave.
How much time to plan in Medellin
A short flight tempts people to plan a long weekend. Surgery does not work that way. These are the reference stays we use at noon:
- Face (for example, rhinoplasty): 1 to 2 weeks.
- Breast: 1 to 2 weeks.
- Body contouring and combined procedures (liposuction, tummy tuck, buttock fat transfer): 2 to 3 weeks.
- Non-surgical aesthetic treatments: usually the same day or a few days.
These are guidelines, not guarantees. Book a flexible return ticket. Your flight home depends on how you heal, not on the date you picked months ago. If it is surgery, bring an adult who can stay with you for the first days.
Our international patients page walks through the full sequence: consultation and labs, surgery, recovery and follow-ups, then home.
Entering Colombia with a U.S. passport
U.S. citizens do not need a tourist visa for Colombia. Under Migración Colombia's rules (Resolution 3167 of 2019), you can stay up to 90 days, extendable to a maximum of 180 days per year, and medical treatment is listed among the activities allowed for tourists. Migración Colombia also recommends filling out Check-MIG, a free online form.
If you hold both U.S. and Colombian citizenship, Colombian law requires you to enter and leave Colombia as a Colombian, so travel with a valid Colombian passport. We are not immigration advisors: confirm current requirements before you fly.
Flying home to South Florida
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) suggests, as a general reference, waiting 5 to 7 days before flying after body procedures like liposuction or breast augmentation, and 7 to 10 days after facial surgery. The ASPS also notes that the risk of blood clots from immobility, such as a flight, is higher during the 6 weeks after surgery. At noon we treat those numbers as context. Your surgeon sets your date at a follow-up visit.
A three-and-a-half-hour flight is short, but it still counts. Follow the travel instructions we give you, stay hydrated and move when you are allowed to.
Then there is the weather. Medellin is mild all year, which makes the first weeks in a compression garment easier. Miami is hot and humid for much of the year, and that garment will feel different once you land. If you are traveling during hurricane season, that is one more reason to keep your ticket flexible.
Back in Miami, you are not on your own. We follow up remotely over WhatsApp or video call. That does not take the place of your follow-up visits in Medellin before you fly, and if something is urgent, go to an emergency room in South Florida.
Why so many South Florida patients choose Medellin
The Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach area is home to about 311,000 people of Colombian origin, according to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2024). In Doral and Weston, roughly 1 in 8 residents has Colombian roots. Chances are you know someone who has already been to Medellin, and you may want to combine the trip with family time.
That support network helps. Just keep the order straight: recovery first, visits second. If you are weighing the trip from farther north, see our guide for patients coming from New York. When you are ready, message us and we will plan your dates with you.
Procedures in this guide
This guide is for information only and does not replace a medical consultation. Your specialist decides, in person, whether a procedure is right for you, your recovery time and when you can fly home. Every procedure carries risks and results vary from person to person.
