Plastic surgery in Medellin
from Atlanta, one connection
Two flights each way. Planning them carefully is part of a safe recovery.
If you're considering plastic surgery in Medellin from Atlanta, here's the first thing to know: there is no nonstop flight between the two cities. That's not a dealbreaker. It just means your trip, and especially your flight home, needs more planning than a quick hop from Miami.
This page is for Atlanta residents weighing the trip: Colombian Americans with family back home, and people who simply keep hearing about Medellin and want the honest version.
Getting from Atlanta to Medellin
You have two realistic options:
- Delta, Atlanta to Bogota, then a domestic flight to Medellin. Delta flies nonstop from ATL to Bogota, Colombia's capital. Short domestic flights run from Bogota to Medellin.
- Connect inside the U.S. Miami has nonstop service to Medellin on American and Avianca (roughly 3 h 30 min). Houston has a United nonstop (roughly 4 h 40 min). Fly ATL to one of those hubs, then straight to Medellin.
Flight times are approximate and routes change, so check current schedules. One more thing travelers don't expect: Medellin's international airport, José María Córdova (MDE), sits in the town of Rionegro, outside the city. Plan for the drive to your hotel.
The flight home is the part to plan hardest
Flying down is easy. Flying back a week or two after surgery is different. A connecting itinerary means more hours in a seat, a walk through a terminal, maybe a security line.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes that the risk of blood clots from immobility, long flights included, is higher in the six weeks after surgery. As a general reference, the ASPS suggests waiting 5 to 7 days before flying after body procedures and 7 to 10 days after facial surgery. At noon, that's background, not a rule: your surgeon clears your flight at your follow-up visit.
What that means for booking:
- Pick a sensible layover. Too short and you're rushing between gates. Too long and you're sitting for hours.
- Buy a flexible return ticket. Your return date depends on how you heal, not on the calendar.
- Bring a companion. For surgery, you need an adult with you for the first days. On a two-leg trip home, they handle the bags and the connection.
- Ask before discharge. Compression garments, moving during the flight, medication: your surgeon gives you instructions for your case.
Once you're home in Atlanta, you can still reach us. We follow up remotely by WhatsApp or video call. That doesn't replace the in-person checkups in Medellin before your flight, and in an emergency, go to a local emergency room.
How long to stay in Medellin
These are the reference ranges we give patients traveling from another city:
- Face surgery: 1 to 2 weeks.
- Breast surgery: 1 to 2 weeks.
- Body contouring and combined procedures: 2 to 3 weeks. That covers liposuction, a tummy tuck or a mommy makeover.
- Non-surgical aesthetic treatments: usually the same day or a few days.
If you're asking for PTO, ask for more than you think you need. Not everything fits into a one-week trip, and a combined procedure almost never does.
Atlanta's Colombian community
About 49,000 people of Colombian origin live in metro Atlanta, according to the Census Bureau. It's a smaller community than Miami's or New York's. If you have family in Colombia, you may want to combine the trip with a visit. That works, as long as the visit doesn't eat into your recovery. Surgery and follow-ups come first.
How we handle surgery in Medellin
When you live a connection away, the rules matter more, not less. Surgery happens only in licensed operating rooms at Q2, never in an office. Nobody is approved over a chat: your surgeon examines you in person and orders pre-op labs, and if results aren't where they need to be, surgery is postponed.
Every surgery carries risk, including bleeding, infection, healing problems or anesthesia complications, and we walk you through each one before you sign the informed consent. If a procedure isn't safe or doesn't make sense for you, you'll hear it from us. Our safety page (in Spanish) lists warning signs to watch for anywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct flight from Atlanta to Medellin?
Not right now. Delta flies nonstop from Atlanta to Bogota, and short domestic flights connect Bogota to Medellin. You can also connect through a U.S. city with nonstop service to Medellin, such as Miami or Houston. Check current schedules before you book.
Is it safe to fly home with a connection after plastic surgery?
A connecting trip means more hours sitting and a change of planes. The ASPS notes that the risk of blood clots from immobility is higher in the 6 weeks after surgery. Choose a sensible layover, a flexible ticket and a travel companion, and fly only when your surgeon clears you.
How long should I stay in Medellin after surgery?
As a guide: face or breast surgery, 1 to 2 weeks; body contouring and combined procedures, 2 to 3 weeks; non-surgical aesthetic treatments, usually the same day or a few days. Your surgeon decides when you can fly.
Do U.S. citizens need a visa to go to Colombia for surgery?
U.S. citizens do not need a tourist visa. Entry is granted for up to 90 days, and Migración Colombia's rules list medical treatment among permitted tourist activities. If you are a dual Colombian-U.S. citizen, travel with your valid Colombian passport. Always check current requirements before you travel.
Can I have my consultation online from Atlanta?
We can share information and book your appointment over WhatsApp, but the consultation itself is in person in Medellin. No one is scheduled for surgery without an in-person evaluation and lab work.
Can I check in with the noon team after I'm back in Atlanta?
Yes. After you return, we follow up remotely over WhatsApp or video call. It complements the in-person follow-up visits in Medellin, which happen before you fly; it doesn't replace them. For an emergency, go to an emergency room in Atlanta.
