Plastic surgery in Colombia
from Houston, no shortcuts
A practical guide for Texans considering surgery in Colombia: safety checks, timing, the time zone and the trip home.
Houston has a United nonstop to Medellín, which makes plastic surgery in Colombia from Houston easier to plan than most people think. A short flight doesn't make surgery any less serious, though. Here's how we'd plan it at noon Clinic, starting with cost, since that's usually what puts Colombia on the table, and what to check besides price.
Plastic surgery in Colombia from Houston: cost, then safety
Cost is part of why people look at Colombia, so here's what the US numbers mean. According to the ASPS, the average surgeon's fee is USD 4,875 for breast augmentation with implants, USD 7,637 for rhinoplasty and USD 4,711 for liposuction. Those figures cover the surgeon's fee only: no anesthesia, operating room or other expenses.
We don't publish prices. Cost is defined at your in-person consultation, once your surgeon knows what you actually need.
Then look past price. Every surgery carries risks, in Houston or in Colombia: bleeding, infection, healing problems and anesthesia complications, among others. Ask any clinic, ours included, four things. Where does surgery happen? At noon, in licensed operating rooms at Q2, never in a doctor's office. Will someone examine me in person first? Yes, in Medellín; WhatsApp is for questions and scheduling. Are pre-op labs required? Yes, and surgery is postponed if results aren't right. Will you explain the risks before I sign? Yes, one by one, before the informed consent.
A clinic that says yes to everything is a red flag. Our safety page (in Spanish) lists six of them.
Houston to Medellín: the nonstop route
United flies nonstop from Bush Intercontinental (IAH) to Medellín in roughly 4 hours 40 minutes. Schedules change, so confirm before you book.
A nonstop matters most on the way home. After surgery, every connection means another line, another bag to lift and more hours sitting still. One flight removes all of that.
A detail first-timers miss: Medellín's international airport, José María Córdova (MDE), is in Rionegro, a separate town outside the city. You'll have a drive between the airport and your lodging, so plan it ahead, especially for your departure day.
How long you'll stay in Medellín
The flight is short. The stay isn't, and it shouldn't be. Our reference ranges:
- Face surgery, like rhinoplasty: 1 to 2 weeks.
- Breast surgery, like breast augmentation: 1 to 2 weeks.
- Body contouring and combined procedures, like liposuction: 2 to 3 weeks.
- Non-surgical aesthetic treatments: usually same day or a few days.
Procedure pages are in Spanish. For context, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) suggests waiting 5 to 7 days before flying after body procedures and 7 to 10 days after facial surgery, and notes that blood clot risk from immobility, long flights included, is higher for 6 weeks after surgery. At noon, your surgeon clears you to fly home at a follow-up visit. Buy a flexible return ticket.
The time zone works in your favor
Most guides assume you're on Eastern time. Houston isn't. Colombia stays on the same clock all year, so from March to November Houston and Medellín match exactly, and in winter Houston is one hour behind. If you plan to answer a few work emails during recovery, or your family in Texas wants a call every night, there's almost nothing to adjust.
Coming home to Texas weather
Houston is hot and humid much of the year, and it gets hurricane season too. Both affect your return. Many body procedures require a compression garment for weeks, which is tough in a Texas summer, and a storm can cancel a flight when your return date already depends on healing. Medellín's mild, spring-like climate is easier to recover in.
Once you're back in Houston, we keep checking in remotely, over WhatsApp or video call. That's on top of, not instead of, the follow-up visits in Medellín before you fly, and anything urgent means a Houston emergency room.
Entry rules and a travel companion
US citizens don't need a tourist visa for Colombia. Entry is granted for up to 90 days, extendable, and the rules list medical treatment as a permitted activity. Migración Colombia recommends the free online Check-MIG form. Dual US-Colombian citizens should travel on their valid Colombian passport. Other passports have different rules, so check current requirements before you travel.
For surgery, you need an adult with you for the first several days. About 62,000 people of Colombian origin live in the Houston area. If you have family in Colombia, they may be able to help. If not, bring someone you trust and stay close to the clinic.
