Plastic surgery in Colombia
from New York and New Jersey

A longer flight home means more planning up front. Here is how to do it right.

Guides · noon Clinic team · Updated October 10, 2026

If you live in New York or New Jersey and are researching plastic surgery in Colombia from New York, you have probably noticed that most of what is online is about the surgery. Very little covers the part that matters just as much: the trip home. From JFK, Medellin is about five and a half hours nonstop. From Newark, there is no nonstop at all. This guide starts with that, then works backward to how we keep surgery safe.

Plan the flight home before you book

Most people choose an airport for the way out. With surgery, choose it for the way back.

  • JFK. Avianca flies nonstop to Medellin in about 5 hours and 30 minutes. One flight, no connection.
  • Newark (EWR). No nonstop to Medellin. United flies nonstop to Bogotá, Colombia's capital, and from there it is a short domestic flight to Medellin.

Getting to your consultation through Bogotá is easy. Coming home through Bogotá, a few days or weeks after surgery, means a plane change, more hours sitting and more time in airports. If you live in Elizabeth or North Jersey, Newark may look more convenient on a map. Count the full door-to-door trip before you decide, and check current schedules, since routes change.

What the ASPS says about flying after surgery

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) suggests, as a general reference, waiting 5 to 7 days before flying after body procedures such as liposuction or breast augmentation, and 7 to 10 days after facial surgery like rhinoplasty. It also notes that the risk of blood clots from immobility, including long flights, is higher during the 6 weeks after surgery.

We share these numbers as context, not as your schedule. At noon Clinic, your surgeon clears you to fly at a follow-up visit, based on how you are actually healing. On a five-and-a-half-hour flight, that matters. Follow the travel instructions you are given.

How much time off to request

New Yorkers tend to plan vacation days down to the hour, so here are the reference stays we use in Medellin:

  • Face, such as rhinoplasty: 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Breast, such as breast augmentation: 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Body contouring and combined procedures, such as a mommy makeover: 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Non-surgical aesthetic treatments: usually the same day or a few days.

Not everything fits into a one-week trip. If one week is all you have, we will tell you honestly what can and cannot be done in that time. Book a flexible return ticket. The procedure pages linked here are in Spanish.

Plastic surgery in Colombia from New York, done safely in Medellin

Every surgery carries risks: bleeding, infection, healing problems and anesthesia-related complications, among others. Nobody can promise otherwise. What a clinic can do is follow standards that reduce avoidable risk:

  1. In-person consultation. Our specialists, plastic surgeon Dr. Fernando Ruiz and aesthetic physician Dr. Valeria Enciso, see you in person in Medellin before anything is decided.
  2. Required pre-op labs. If results are not in order, surgery is postponed.
  3. Operating rooms only. Surgeries take place in licensed operating rooms at Q2, never in an office.
  4. Informed consent. Each risk is explained before you decide.
  5. Follow-up visits in Medellin. You fly home only when your surgeon clears you.

Winter in New York, mild weather in Medellin

If you live in New York, the colder months make sense for this trip. Medellin has mild weather all year, so you recover without bundling up. In winter, New York and Medellin are on the same clock, which keeps calls with work and family simple. From March to November, New York is one hour ahead.

The return is the contrast. You land in a cold city with subway stairs, icy sidewalks and a coat over your compression garment. Line up help for your first days home before you leave. We stay in touch after you land, with remote follow-up over WhatsApp or video call. It doesn't replace the in-person visits in Medellin before your flight, and in an emergency, go to an emergency room in New York.

December is its own case. It tends to be a busy time for travel to Colombia, and the holidays rarely leave room for rest. If you are thinking about December, reach out early.

A large Colombian community, close to home

The New York, Newark and Jersey City area has about 314,000 people of Colombian origin, one of the largest communities in the country according to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2024). Queens County alone has about 73,000, with Jackson Heights among its best-known Colombian neighborhoods. In Elizabeth, New Jersey, roughly 1 in 8 residents has Colombian roots.

That may mean a cousin who has been to Medellin, or a parent who lives there and can be the adult who stays with you after surgery. That support helps. Someone else's experience is not a substitute for your own consultation, though.

Before you book: entry requirements

U.S. citizens do not need a tourist visa for Colombia. Migración Colombia allows stays of up to 90 days, extendable to 180 days per year, and lists medical treatment among permitted tourist activities. Dual U.S.-Colombian citizens must enter and leave as Colombians, so bring a valid Colombian passport. Check-MIG, a free online form, is recommended. Confirm current requirements before you travel.

This guide is for information only and does not replace a medical consultation. Your specialist decides, in person, whether a procedure is right for you, your recovery time and when you can fly home. Every procedure carries risks and results vary from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct flight from New York to Medellin?

Yes, from JFK. Avianca flies nonstop to Medellin in about 5 hours and 30 minutes. There is no nonstop from Newark (EWR) to Medellin: United flies nonstop to Bogotá, and you connect on a short domestic flight. Check current schedules before booking.

How long should I stay in Colombia after plastic surgery?

As a reference: face and breast surgery, 1 to 2 weeks; body contouring and combined procedures, 2 to 3 weeks. Your surgeon clears you to fly at a follow-up visit, based on how you are healing.

Can I have a virtual consultation before traveling to Medellin?

We can share information and book your consultation over WhatsApp, but the consultation itself is in person in Medellin. No one is diagnosed or approved for surgery remotely, and pre-op lab work is required.

Do I need someone to travel with me?

If you are having surgery, yes. We ask that an adult stay with you for the first days after surgery in Medellin.

What happens if my surgeon says I am not ready to fly?

You stay until you are cleared. That is why we recommend a flexible return ticket and some extra time off work. Your return date depends on your recovery, not the calendar.

How do you handle follow-up once I'm back in New York or New Jersey?

Remotely, over WhatsApp or video call, so you can check in about your recovery. This doesn't replace the follow-up visits in Medellin your surgeon asks for before you fly. For an emergency, go to the nearest emergency room.
