Summer trip

A summer plastic surgery trip
to Colombia, without the surprises

School's out, you've got the time off work, and the trip to Colombia to see family is already taking shape. The question is whether that same trip has room for a procedure too.

Summer vacation is here: school just let out, you got the time off work, and the trip to Colombia to see family is already coming together. Then the other question shows up: since you'll already be in Medellín for a few weeks, should you get a procedure done, too, the one you've been putting off for months? It's a fair question, but answering it well means looking past the US school calendar. In Medellín, June, July and August aren't exactly a quiet stretch.

Medellín doesn't really have a "summer"

If you're used to a brutal Houston summer or Miami's humidity, it's tempting to picture Medellín as a cooler break. That part's true, but not because of summer: the city stays mild almost all year, with daily highs and lows roughly between 63 and 82°F, and no sharply different seasons the way the US has. There's no hot summer to wait out and no winter to dodge. The weather barely changes the math on when to go. What actually changes it is everything else happening in Medellín during those same weeks.

Why June, July and August are peak season there too

Here's what most people never check before booking: while summer in the US means family travel, June and July are Colombia's own mid-year school vacation, and that drives a domestic travel season that pushes flight demand and fares up, the same way December does. It's not just people living abroad flying home, like in December; it's Colombian families traveling inside the country at the same time. On top of that, something happens that doesn't happen any other month: the Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival), Medellín's biggest annual event. It runs every year from roughly late July into mid-August, with parades through the city, free cultural events, and its best-known closing event, the Desfile de Silleteros, a parade of flower-covered wooden frames carried on growers' backs. Those days bring more traffic, more visitors and fuller hotels. We won't give you an exact date for the year you're traveling, since it shifts a little each edition; what we can tell you is to check the official city calendar before you book.

Body contouring or combined surgeryReference stay: 2 to 3 weeks

Summer's real advantage isn't the weather, it's the time

Unlike December, US summer usually hands you something genuinely useful: more real days off, without a packed schedule of family gatherings every single night. If the kids are out of school and someone else in the family also has time off, there's more room for a surgery with a 2- to 3-week reference stay to fit around the rest of life back home. That doesn't mean every week of July or August works equally well. If you're planning a quiet recovery and don't want to be out and about much, it can be worth checking that your lowest-energy days don't land right in the middle of the Feria de las Flores, when the city is busier and getting around takes longer. That's not a rule we're imposing, just something worth knowing before you decide.

One thing doesn't change between December and July: if you're traveling with a partner or your kids, someone still needs to be the adult companion in the first days if the procedure is a surgery. That's not a minor detail when you're also supposed to be on a family vacation. Traveling with a companion for surgery abroad (page in Spanish) covers what that person actually does day to day and how to fit it around the rest of the trip.

Ten days isn't the same as a month

If your summer trip is ten days and the priority is the kids and family, a non-surgical treatment, like hyaluronic acid fillers, takes a single visit or a few days and leaves the rest of the trip open. Surgery is a different conversation: breast augmentation, for example, calls for a 1- to 2-week reference stay, with real rest early on. If your trip runs three weeks or longer, especially if part of the family is staying in Medellín longer than you are, it can make more sense to rent a place of your own instead of moving between hotels. Where to stay in Medellín to recover after surgery (page in Spanish) goes into that, and how long to stay in Colombia after plastic surgery (page in Spanish) helps you work out the exact number for your procedure.

What doesn't change just because you're on vacation

We won't tell you that any week of summer works the same for any procedure, or that your family's schedule outranks what your specialist decides. Every procedure carries risks, and a date picked only because "you're already there" isn't a good enough reason to have surgery. What we can offer is an in-person consultation with our specialists, whatever pre-op tests the procedure requires, and WhatsApp or video follow-up once you're back in the US, which supports but never replaces the in-person checks your specialist orders before you fly.

This week, before you lock in your summer flights, message us on WhatsApp and tell us how many real days you have and whether you're traveling with kids or a companion. We'll help you figure out what actually fits in that trip, and what's better left for another date.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine summer break with my kids and a procedure?

It depends on your real number of days and who's watching the kids while you rest. Body-contouring or combined surgeries call for a 2- to 3-week stay; face or breast surgery, 1 to 2 weeks. Message us with your dates and we'll go over it.

Does Medellín get hot in July and August?

No. Medellín doesn't really have seasons: temperatures stay mild nearly year-round, roughly 63 to 82°F. Summer's real challenge isn't the heat, it's that July and August are also peak travel season there.

Should I avoid traveling during the Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival)?

You don't have to avoid it, but you should plan around it. Medellín's biggest annual festival runs every year from roughly late July into mid-August, with more visitors, traffic and full hotels during those days. If you want a quiet recovery, it's worth checking whether your trip overlaps before you book.

Should I book flights far in advance for summer?

Yes. June and July are peak mid-year vacation season to Colombia, with more travelers and fares that rise with demand. Book early and, if you can, keep your return flexible.

If my trip is short, what can I actually get done?

Non-surgical treatments like hyaluronic acid fillers take a single visit or a few days. Surgery, like breast augmentation, needs more time in the city; which one fits your trip gets decided at an in-person consultation.
