Flying in for lipo
Liposuction in Medellín,
Colombia, for US Patients
One trip, one real decision: what can safely go together in the same surgery, and why that call belongs to your surgeon, not your calendar.
You've been saving liposuction before-and-after photos for weeks, and the question isn't really whether to do it anymore. It's how this works when you live in Houston, Miami or New Jersey and you've got exactly one trip to make it happen. Liposuction in Medellín, Colombia isn't a different procedure than the one you'd get at a clinic back home. What changes is the logistics, the timing, and how much you try to pack into that single trip.
What liposuction actually does (and doesn't)
Liposuction removes localized fat that doesn't respond to diet or exercise, sculpting areas like the abdomen, waist, back, arms or thighs. It isn't a weight-loss method. It works best on people at a stable weight, close to where they want to stay, who are after shape, not a lower number on the scale.
At noon, it's done in an operating room, inside Q2's licensed surgical suites, never in a consultation office. Depending on the areas treated, it runs 2 to 5 hours under general or spinal anesthesia. Whether it's right for you, and how much it covers, gets decided by the surgeon at your in-person consultation, not on a form you fill out before booking a flight.
The question almost everyone asks: can it be combined with something else?
If you're flying in from far away, it's a reasonable thing to want: one flight, one recovery, two things handled at once. Liposuction with fat transfer to the buttocks, the most requested combination, is a real option, and it has its own page: lipotransferencia glútea (the procedure pages on our site are in Spanish, like most of noon's website; the content still applies to you). But it isn't a vacation-scheduling call. Your surgeon decides, with your pre-op tests in hand, not the number of days off your job approved.
There's a specific reason for that caution, and it's not just clinic caution for its own sake. The CDC reviewed deaths of US citizens following cosmetic surgery abroad between 2009 and 2022, and found that nearly all the fat embolism cases in that detailed review involved patients who'd had liposuction combined with fat transfer to the buttocks (BBL) in the same surgery. The CDC itself points to the risk factor as combining several long procedures in one surgery, along with obesity, not the country where it happens. That's exactly why that decision at noon runs through pre-op tests, not "you're already here, might as well." The risk isn't the country. It's how much you try to fit into one surgery.
How the trip to Medellín gets organized from the US
First comes the in-person consultation in Medellín, with your pre-op tests in order. That's where the surgeon confirms whether liposuction is right for you, whether to combine it with anything else, and how many days you actually need. We work with a reference of 2 to 3 weeks for body contouring, built to leave room for follow-up visits before you fly, not just the surgery and the suitcase.
Your return flight date gets confirmed by your surgeon at the follow-up, not from a calculation you made in Houston before you've even landed at Rionegro (that's where Medellín's airport, José María Córdova, actually sits, outside the city itself). If you're already at that part of the planning, we cover it in more detail in when can I fly after liposuction.
You travel with a companion for the first days if it's surgery. Someone who's actually with you where you're staying, not someone who drops you at the airport and comes back for you at the end.
What we won't promise you
No surgery is risk-free, and liposuction isn't the exception. We don't promise a specific size or a result that matches the photo saved on your phone. What we can tell you is how the decision actually gets made: an in-person consultation, pre-op tests before anyone operates, a surgeon who tells you no when that's the right call, and follow-up care that continues once you're back in the US, by WhatsApp or video call, without that replacing the in-person checks you need before flying.
If you're still deciding whether liposuction is right for you, or you'd rather start by checking how to verify a clinic is doing this the right way, is it safe to get plastic surgery in Colombia (also in Spanish) walks through exactly that.
Before you look at flights this week, message us on WhatsApp and tell us which areas interest you and if you're thinking about combining anything else. That's how we start planning real dates, not a guess made from your phone screen.
Procedures in this guide

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Does liposuction help you lose weight?
No. Liposuction sculpts contour by removing localized fat that doesn't respond to diet or exercise; it isn't a weight-loss method. It works best for people at a stable weight who want to define shape, not drop pounds.
Can I combine liposuction with another procedure on the same trip?
Sometimes, but it's not a scheduling decision. Your surgeon decides based on your pre-op tests, at your in-person consultation. The most requested combination is liposuction with fat transfer to the buttocks, and it gets its own case-by-case call.
How long does the surgery take, and what anesthesia is used?
At noon, liposuction runs 2 to 5 hours depending on the areas treated, under general or spinal anesthesia. It's always performed in an operating room, in Q2's licensed surgical suites, never in a doctor's office.
How many days do I need to stay in Medellín?
We work with a reference of 2 to 3 weeks for body contouring, built to leave room for follow-up visits before you fly. The exact number for your case gets confirmed once you're in Medellín.
Who does the consultation and the surgery?
Dr. Fernando Ruiz, noon's plastic surgeon. The consultation is always in person in Medellín; WhatsApp is for getting information and booking, not for approving anyone remotely.
