Nutrition consultation or meal plan: what it is

Many people search for this as a nutrition consultation, a personalized diet, or a meal plan. It's an eating plan made for you, with one clear goal: improving your health, getting ready for surgery, or maintaining your results. At noon, your consultation and your plan are with Dr. Valeria Enciso, an aesthetic physician. Visits last 45 minutes, and the number of sessions depends on your plan. The change is gradual. According to the CDC, eating well, moving regularly, managing stress, and getting enough sleep help you maintain a healthy weight.

Nutrition before and after surgery

What you eat before and after surgery can affect how you heal. An article from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) explains that protein helps repair tissue and fight off infection, and that if you're short on protein, calories, or nutrients, your recovery can suffer. After major weight loss, a review highlighted by the ASPS recommends that surgeons order tests to look for nutritional deficiencies before surgery to remove excess skin. Your surgeon and your doctor decide whether a plan before surgery makes sense in your case. The rest of the steps are on our international patients page.

Keeping your weight and your results

If you've had surgery or you're planning to, keeping a stable weight matters. The ASPS explains that liposuction results are long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight and general fitness. For a tummy tuck, the ASPS warns that large changes in weight can greatly reduce the result, and it advises anyone planning to lose a lot of weight to put off the surgery. If you're thinking about surgery and also about losing weight, tell your surgeon at your consultation. That way you can decide what comes first.

When another option makes more sense

Nutrition alone doesn't solve everything. Depending on your case, a different path may fit better:

  • If you're overweight or have obesity: medical weight loss, which adds lab tests, regular follow-up visits, and prescription medication, but only if the doctor recommends it after evaluating you.
  • If what bothers you is fat in one specific area: fat freezing with cryolipolysis (in Spanish), or liposuction. Neither one is a way to lose weight.
  • If you're a man and your chest is enlarged because of glandular tissue: gynecomastia surgery. According to the ASPS, neither strict dieting nor intense exercise reduces that tissue.

At your consultation, we'll tell you what makes sense for you.

Shortcuts to avoid

Before you buy anything to lose weight, keep in mind what health authorities warn:

  • In June 2026, INVIMA, Colombia's national drug and food regulatory agency, issued an alert about weight-loss products without a health registration that are sold through social media, unauthorized websites, and messaging apps. Reported possible side effects included persistent dizziness, feeling faint, and changes in blood fat levels. Before you buy, check the product's health registration.
  • The FDA has found weight-loss products, such as pills and teas, with hidden ingredients that can cause serious health problems and hospitalization.
  • The FDA advises being wary of claims like "miraculous cure" or "secret ingredient."

If you're already taking one, tell us at your consultation.

What to tell your doctor before you start

To make sure the plan is safe for you, tell your doctor:

  • Everything you take: medications, vitamins, and supplements. The FDA recommends bringing that list to every appointment.
  • If you have surgery scheduled. In an ASPS article, a surgeon warns that supplements such as vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, garlic, ginseng, and fish oil can increase the risk of bleeding.
  • If you're pregnant or breastfeeding. The same FDA guidance advises checking any supplement with your baby's health care provider.
  • If your health has changed since your last visit.

Coming from abroad

Plan your trip.

Aesthetic treatments usually take the same day or a few days, so they fit into a short trip. Your doctor confirms your plan at the consultation.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need it before surgery?

Not always, but it helps you recover better. Whether we recommend it depends on your case.

How much weight will I lose on the nutrition plan?

There's no number anyone can promise. It depends on where you're starting and on your health, and the change is gradual. According to the CDC, people who lose weight at a gradual, steady pace are more likely to keep it off. We set your goal with you at your consultation.

Do I need to lose weight before liposuction?

The ASPS makes clear that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity and does not replace diet and exercise, and it describes ideal candidates as adults close to their ideal weight. Whether you should lose weight first, and how much, is up to your surgeon at your in-person consultation.

What should I eat after plastic surgery?

It depends on your surgery, and your specialist gives you the exact instructions. In general, an ASPS article recommends focusing on whole, protein-rich foods such as chicken, fish, eggs, and lean meats, along with fruits, vegetables, and good hydration. The surgeons it quotes advise avoiding alcohol before and after surgery and not mixing it with pain medication.

What should I bring to my first nutrition consultation?

A list of everything you take, including vitamins and supplements, as the FDA recommends, and any recent test results you have. If you want a head start, write down everything you eat and drink for a few days, as the CDC suggests. If you have surgery scheduled, tell us which one and when.
